The Central government may have been critical of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) Vinod Rai for taking out a series of adverse findings on government policies, but the contribution of the auditor seems to have been recognized by the United Nations which has appointed him as Chairman of its panel of external auditor.

Rai as Chairman will oversee the audit of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), besides setting agenda for all UN specialized agencies such as the World Health Organisation (WHO), World Food Program me (WFP) and the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO).

Along with director general of CAG, Jagbans Singh, Rai will audit the accounts and management  operations   of the UN and its specialized agencies and submit the report to the UN General Assembly.

Like any other organization, the accounts and management operations of the UN, the specialized agencies (WHO, WFP, WIPO, others) and the IAEA are required to be audited and reported periodically by independent external auditors, who are supreme audit institutions of various countries selected by the United Nations. Rai will give direction to the external auditors and will have a final say in preparation of the reports before they are placed to the United Nations General Assembly. The findings and recommendations of the panel auditors are taken seriously, and the reports are closely monitored for effective implementation.

Along with Rai, Jagbans Singh, director general in the office of CAG, has also been elected as the Chairman of the UN’s technical group of the panel of external auditors. Much of the external auditors’ work is determined by the technical group that is mandated to set specific topics of interest to be taken up for audit.
